Monday Make :: Day of the Dead Earrings
Let’s get this month started off right with some Day of the Dead earrings!
The Day of the Dead (or Dia de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated on the Roman Catholic All Hallows Day, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day from October 31st to November 2nd. Its focus is on the gathering of family and friends to celebrate, honor, and remember those members of the family who have died.
Some symbols that are typical of this celebration are
- sugar skulls
- flowers, especially marigolds and roses
Families often meet at cemeteries to care for and maintain loved ones’ gravestones, and altars at local churches are festooned in flowers and other offerings. In some Latin American communities, streets become canvases in which colored sawdust is used to “paint” beautiful but ephemeral pictures.
Michelle Mach created these Day of the Dead earrings that are playful but slightly eerie. They’re made with our white Bead Gallery® skull beads, which also come in a variety of colors and materials. You can find them in metal finishes as well as stone, so look for them in silver and gold as well as our new rose gold skull beads which you can find at the end of the Bead Gallery aisle at your local Michaels Store. By using a variety of bad caps, rose beads and spacers, you can make mix-and-match earrings or a bunch of matching pairs for you and your friends!
